When a world comes crashing down its not like it happens all at once, its a gradual thing like a corruption speading across a wound. The literal death of a world could take forever. Or what seems like it for those who are left in that decaying state of existence. For people. For those who have destroyed themselves, the process is similar. But ultimately different The time taken for ti to happen tends to be short, at least to the onlooker. The gradual decay might occur over a few weeks, a month, even a year. But that time like a fast forwarded video watched through the eyes of other people to the person in question will seem as if each second in a month all of its own. Penny understood decay, it was a gradual foundation of madness. Back in those alleyways, spiders and rats moving and shifting all around, gaining their own foothold in the kingdom of waste. Questions needed to be asked of himself, why had he waited there in such horrid squalor. Better question how loud had the noise been within his mind that he had not noticed the dirt and decay around him. Within him. On him.

A butterfly chrysalis of rust, of mud. Of dust. A consistent knocking in his mind upon a door that he didn’t know existed. Things had began tod rift back now in these moments of silence. A recollection of just what things the man had been through long before there was any glimpse of light in his life. Back when there was no imposed order. Back when he had been ruled by the darkness of the ocean. When it had overwhelmed him. When it had comforted him. A bitter mercy.

The man who walked those long dirt roads. Who had delved into the depths of darkness to try and serve the binds of his own order. The cobbled roads old and dusty by long comparison to the places above. Here he had come to build his kingdom. But like him even it was a ghost. In and gone, touching nothing on the annuals of history. It was best for him to be a ghost, to be something false. A lie within a lie that does not truely know what it was. The library, a place of lies. Books without pages and.....a door. He remembered, had almost discovered the truth of things behind that door. Another door....it had been there that the drumming had came from It had been there that he feared to face And right you should. A whispering untruth. But one that was only as true as Wiseman himself. With a crawling sense of foreboding. Penny crawled into his dark corner. Holding his head in his hands. Laughing darkly. Daring himself to remember, remember something important.

Everyone was an enemy. That much he had learned on the first day. This was actually not his first day under Shiori’s employ but rather his first official day ass an employee of her company. They’d managed to find a way to screw the spirit net and force people to think that Wiseman was human. Albiet a rather odd human. Couldn’t much deny his oddness in even the world on the onikonjou. Unfortunately whilst his skills in darker magics were quite good, That was going to be a problem. It seemed that each strand of magic came with a big outer indicator of a persons spiritual signature. Meaning that the moment he used magic. Regardless of his vest people would be able to tell just what he was. Which limited him to physical endeavours. Which again was going to be problematic as he had limited experience in the field. Thankfully his first day in employment happened to come with a training workshop which was likely to last over his career for the next year or so. He’d also enlisted himself in several martial arts classes in the hope that his skills would quickly improve.He’d need it if he was going to survive in this world.

His first new friend on dy one was looking to be his instructor who was going to make things very interesting for him. The man was bald. Which was hardly surprising considering that Penny had learned he was ex military. No idea why ex military men shaved their heads. Maybe it was about presenting something less to grab whilst fighting. But then again hair pulling was for girls ( and dirty fighters, and he wasn’t precisely against playing dirty). “ So you are the new recruit huh?”. The man stood hands at his sides, unimpressed. Pennywise simply nodded. Today he had swapped his usual clothes out for a simple white shirt and urban camo loose fitting pants. It was easy enough to say that there was going to be some rolling around involved in the whole process and he’d much rather that his good clothes didn’t get stained or torn. “ Yeah, that would be me, you been filled in on just what this involves?”. The trainer grinned like a Cheshire cat. Like himself, which threw him slightly off guard.

“ I’d ask you the same question new meat”.

Oh this was going to be fun.

It seemed thought that his trainer was aware of just what this entire thing entailed. Training a spirit to act like a human. Apparently it was more common than he had thought. The only difference being that he had been the first spirit to successfully perfect the art of hiding your spiritual signature. Most creatures simply used techniques of some sort or in some cases resorted to hacking the spirit net. In Penny’s case though he didn’t have to do any of that. He had obtained an item that allowed him to hide his nature. Still despite this it meant that it had come too easy, which allowed other things to give him away in public. According to the trainer. “ Before you change for physical combat, you need to learn how to avoid it in the first place”. Pennywise tilted his head, he didn’t really get that one. The spirits like him tended to jump into fights head first, but maybe that was the point he was trying to make.

“ Humans particularly in the line of work you are moving into will first try to defuse hostile situations with words, keeps the companies reputation in tact, at least in the public eye, but we’ll get to that part later. First lets teach you how to act like a human”.

A person could talk about acting human all day till the cows came home, but the truth of it was that acting thusly for things that wern’t human, whilst not impossible was like training your body to do something that didn’t come naturally. Like teaching a child to swim, when compared to a fish the human will learn both slower and never be as proficient as the animals who live in the water. Just like that example Penny, whilst he would try his best, his true side would probably show throw in little glimmers. Cracks in the mask. But the instructor wanted to do his best by him. “ If a situation arises the first thing you should do is ensure that your client...in this case our heiress is not in danger, position yourself between her and the threat, if the threat is on all sides, you hae to do your best to draw attention away...which we’ll cover following failed negotiations”. Pennywise nodded, listening in, whilst normally he would just nod like a bobble head whilst taking nothing in, He didn’t have much of a choice but to learn here. So learn he would. “ So, negotiation..” he said. “ Just how would you go about ddoing something like that?”. The instructor stepped forward placing both hands behind his back in that military fashion. “ It really depends on the situation that we’re looking at Wiseman...negotiating with a drunk might be different from negotiating with a group of armed thugs intent on either mugging or rape”.

Well. Dealing with a DRUNKEN PERSON. Pennys idea of that was usually smashing their own bottle of alcohol off their noggin. Of course not all things could be dealt with thusly. “ If its a drunk chances are they’re going to be unreasonable, which means you’ve got to be extra reasonable before the situation escalates”> Penny frowned at this, he would have just preferred to let it escalate as chances were that was going to solve the situation faster. “ Offer to buy them another drink. Something to appease them, even if its just simple as kind words sometimes it can make all the difference in avoiding conflict and lessening the danger level....and keep in mind that’s what the primary point of this lessening the levels of danger so your client isn’t put in unnecessary danger of course sometimes even negotiation doesn’t work, which means you’ll have to resort to physical intervention....and well my training will make sure that no matter what size or type of idiot your facing. You’ll be able to eliminate the threat clearly and precisely”. Now he understood most of that. Most of it. “ Now lets get in some practice shall we?”. Fun times. Fun times.

So the short of what he learned was that negotiations tended to fail. A lot.

But apparently they were more successful in the cases of drunks than they were in the cases of violent criminals. But of course that should really be expected. He was interested in just how a situation would arise that you could get out of a dangerous criminal situation, but regardless of however it would end. He knew that he could take care of himself. Of course these lessons in negotiation were only the tip of the iceberg. The point of this intial lesson was to take care of him acting like a human. And this dealt with acting like a human whilst working. But what about in social events? “ Blend in”. That was the first words of this particular lesson. “ Your a wolf, so hide in sheep’s clothing....move among them, watch the...mimic what they do...really no one can teach you how to act, thats something you need to learn for yourself. Every human is different. And will react differently to certain things...you just have to watch for them and take notice when they arise”.

“ The advantage you have in this is that you are pretending, because you aren’t real it means you don’t have any set personality to stick to, it means that you can be a social chameleon...humans are creatures of habit and even the best of operatives whilst pretending let out a sign, a flaw. You though, you aren’t human at all, so having human flaws in your disguise would be through your own choice “.

It was interesting to hear the words but ultimately at the moment thats all they were. With a bit of practice though he began to see just what his trainer meant about blending in. It helped with the subtle manipulations that were sometimes needed and linked together well with his training on negotiation. Hell it might even help in some instances were Shiori began to lose her temper. Hell god knows that happened enough times in a day. Particularly about that ex boyfriend of hers.

Present

He emerged for a breath. Out of the sea and the waters which drowned him in his own memory. So what had he rememberd? Conflict was mananged by pretending. He didn't have a face so he wore a mask. A mask of what he was. One that changed with each person who he spoke to. But who would see this faceless nature behind the mask. The one torn and cut by fingers nails. By his own mad ramblings. Only one had seen behind it thus far. And she had not shyed away. But embraced it. But she was gone. And here he was sitting in the dark once more waiting for purpose. Remembering these things to counter the decay that had occured after his awakening. Reversing it so that once again he might be whole. Once again he might be strong and worthy.

But there were more things to this than met the eye, more things to remember. And whilst he breathed again head above the water. Soon he would be dragged back down into its depths. Just to get another glimpse at the light that lay beyond the dark.
