[Flashback] The White Beast Empty
PostSubject: [Flashback] The White Beast   [Flashback] The White Beast EmptyThu May 19, 2011 10:34 am

Even the village of the moon slept when the night's heavenly sphere was nothing but a circle of darkness that gave no light to work by. Plants were covered with heavy, rough tarp to defend it from the night's frost. Animals were led into the barn to rest in quiet safety. Children were given cups of milk and bits of cheese before they were herded off to bed. One by one, the small flames of the primitive candles all around the village went out and the hardworking people began to rest in preparation for the next day.

But there was one creature up and about at this time of slumber, as her eyes afforded her perfect vision in this darkness. Her name was Iskra, a word that meant "shining" in the half-developed demonic tongue her former clan had spoke in, so named for the iridescence of her blue eyes and her maladaptive white coat that was only useful for hiding when the winter's wrath rolled in. She was large, but nowhere near her final size, and her white coat was spotted, sleek, and healthy-looking. Clearly the animal had been eating good fare since leaving her home, but eating good fare meant the hard and difficult hunt... meant run-ins with other demons who invariably ganged up on her and stole her meals if she did not make haste to hide them.

During the day, she'd sat curiously and watched the villagers, who were similar to gods in her mind for their ability to wield tools. She watched them milk the cattle and herd the sheep. She watched the chickens pecking about the yard from the invisibility of the tall grass on the outskirts of the village. She watched the children play with the fuzzy, puppy-like dogs of theirs. From the scene of tranquility and hard work she derived one verdict. Their livestock was weak: a trait she'd been taught to despise. They had to be destroyed and used to further her own strength. It would be a simple ritual. The creatures would be torn to pieces and go, screaming, down her throat.

To avoid the wrath of the gods, she took advantage of the cover of darkness. For all the gods could do, they couldn't see in the darkness without their little suns on sticks, and they always approached things with much noise and shouting. These handicaps would give her plenty of time to escape their wrath. The ground was cold as she stepped gingerly towards the village, all the while smiling her pride in her own cunning.

The hens of the village, fat, feathered things, nestled over their future brood in fullness of tranquility, heard not the cat-like approach of the ravenous hyena. Indeed, she managed to clasp her jaws around the pitiful contraption defending the birds and tug backwards, snapping the wood in her vice-like jaws. A slight crackling betrayed her, but the hens were in a deep sleep and long accustomed to the sound of creaking wood from the huts and trees. Iskra smiled and licked her chops, gingerly stepping over the ruined threshold towards her meal.

[Flashback] The White Beast Lethebanner3
..Flashback: The White Beast
..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......The sun retreated and night fell upon the forested lands of the Village of the Moon. While the children, peasants, and workers retreated to their quiet abodes, drifting to a peaceful sleep in the cool night air, there were some denizens of the village that remained awake. Much of the interior of the village had no light, as the torches were put out upon night fall as to facilitate in easier rest for the villagers. After all, a village full of villagers who were tired and not well rested was a village that was destined to fail. As risky as darkness in the middle of the village may have been, it was ultimately seen as an adequate trade. That didn't mean, however, that the village was left unprotected. Some of the most dangerous creatures in the wilds came out of hiding at night and stalked in the cover of the darkness. Everyone in the village knew this, and that is why a patrol of the village's samurai warriors kept a close watch over the lands at night.

......One of the patrolmen, a young white haired samurai known as Lethe, walked with a calm confidence on the edge of the village's boundaries. His steady strides took him past another two guards, who were stationed at the main path that led from the village to the outside world. The argued among one another about the night time, wishing they had the day patrol and complaining to one another about the lack of sleep. They stopped their debate as Lethe walked by, nodding to him in acknowledgement, before continuing their conversation as the patrolmen continued past. Unlike some of his brethren he didn't mind the night patrol, and truth be told preferred the night time over the day. The stars and other celestial scenes in the night sky were a thing of natural beauty to him, surpassing anything he could witness on this planet, and enjoyed the sights of the night sky. Of course, the colder temperatures that usually came with the rising of the moon was a thing of great preference for him as well. He hated heat, and especially abhorred hot weather.

......Lethe continued along, tracing the outline of the village with his patrol route. It had been completely uneventful this night, and he was actually becoming quite bored. The man sighed deeply as he came around the back end of town, taking a seat on a neatly stacked pile of chopped wood, reaching into his clothing to pull out a canteen. Inside was fresh water, and the cool refreshment of the drink made him feel better. It was strange how cold water could help him concentrate, even in times like this. "Ahhh ..." He remarked quietly to himself, taking another heavy swig on the drink. Taking a deep breath, he sat in silence and listened to the sound the crickets and other insects of the night, calling out to others of their kind. In it's own way, it was music.

......Snap. The sound of a snapping twig drew his attention, the man's pupil's enlarging as he took in more light in the dark night. If it had come from in front of him or any distance away it may have no alarmed him, but this actually seemed to originate from the village. Securing the canteen back to his belt, the samurai rose from his seat and began to walk quietly across the village. He wasn't exactly sure where the sound came from, but his first thought was where the livestock would be. In lands such as these, one of the most valuable things to anyone was food.

......Lethe's steps were soft and quiet, an ability that was rather surprising for someone of his size. For a time, the only thing he continued to hear was the soft crunch of the dewed grass beneath his feet. Another sound met his ears, and even though this was still quiet, it was louder than the twig had been. In fact, it sounded like - Lethe broke into a sprint, only a good 20 yards away from the chicken coops. The sound he heard was unmistakable, and was the auditory noise of chicken wire being cut. Whatever man was trying to steal from them would be strung up by his feet. Stealing in this kind of area was a near capital offense.

......Lethe leaped over a stack of crates and landed on the other side, directly in front of the coops that housed the chickens. He turned quickly, rose to his feet and drew his blade, and readied himself to face a bandit. What he actually saw, however, caused him to pause.

......It was a hyena.

Iskra paused, her progress arrested by the sudden presence of a torchless god. What an unusual turn of events. Her mind worked swiftly. She could attempt to bite the god, for despite their designation in her head they were only mortal, or she could attempt to flee. It wasn't a war of attrition, after all. These chickens would likely be here the next night and the night after, and she could instead strike at the fat cows or the lazy sheep. No reason to make this her last stand, after all. It was a matter of conserving energy since now she lived alone.

So she snapped and snarled once, making a wide circle around the young man wherein she kept her teeth bared as she turned to him. It was a young god... very big and strong. The beast could respect that. He was not to be destroyed as the chickens were or even any dogs that may have come to repel her presence. He could live. When her semicircle was complete, she lowered herself to the ground and took off in a hasty sprint, seeking the refuge of the black night forests.

[Flashback] The White Beast Lethebanner3
..Flashback: The White Beast
..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......His muscles didn't seem to be responding, and the young warrior found himself frozen in his tracks for several moments. It wasn't out of fear or any of the primal instincts that typically overtook people in situations like this, but was instead caused by the fact he fell into a deep reminiscence of his past. These beats caused the death of his family, and as a child he watched in overwhelming horror as both of his parents were eaten alive. Sure, perhaps some could argue they'd encroached on the pack's territory first and had even gone as far as to kill one of their kind, but a child never thought of such things at a time like that and the feelings and emotions he held from the event would carry through his entire life. In more ways than one he hated these creatures.

......It was a strange though ... even as this new one circled him with it's teeth bared, he didn't feel a natural hatred towards it. Even in the darkness he could make out it's fur, which held a beautiful spotted pattern within it. It reminded him of the pattern on a spotted leopard, but possessing a much more calming - as strange as that may seem - pattern with cooler colors. It's blue eyes stood out as well, as from what he could remember the ones he'd come across had eyes of the blackest night, a gaze that was truly evil he had decided later. This one was different, though.

......Before his mind could process any more, it took off running. If he had been anyone else he probably would have let it go, simply happy that the chickens were safe and that it hadn't attacked. For whatever reason, though, he was driven for for. His eyes narrowed along the path she was escaping from, and after muttering a word under his breath and extending his hand toward the area, the beast froze in place. Below the hyena, on it's path of escape, the ground had - seemingly out of nowhere - frozen around it's feet and left it frozen in place. Unbeknownst to many in the village, Lethe was adept at magical arts, specifically in the art of ice. He was able to harness the unforgiving element, and through it was able to freeze it's feet in place as it tried to make it's escape.

......Lethe looked around him cautiously, making sure that nobody else from the village was around, and continued over to the animal. As he approached he made further note of the beast, and judging from a variety of things it was a female. The icy warrior said nothing as he approached the frozen animal, standing beside it and looking down on it. "Where's your pack?" Lethe asked quietly. Even he wasn't sure why he was talking to the animal as if it could understand him, but something possessed him to regardless. It was a valid question, after all. These animals usually always moved in a pack, but a pack never approached so close to the village. The packs knew better, so for a hyena to be in the village would mean that it was either sent to it's death by some cruel bestial trick, or that it was a loner.

......"Unless you don't have a pack." The human finally articulated his thought, and walked in a slow circle around the animal. He knew that he should kill her. She'd be back again for more of their food and if she were a human she'd have already been killed by any other guard. Lethe couldn't put his finger on why he felt empathetic towards her. She was alone in the world, without a pack, which in some small way reminded him of himself. Sure, he'd been raised in this village and taken on as one of their own, but they weren't his real family. He was grateful to them, yes, but they could never replace his parents.

......"Wait here." Lethe said with a resigning sigh. He backtracked and went back to the chicken coop, grabbing the nearest bird and killing it nearly instantly with a quick snap of it's neck. It was done so quickly and efficiently that the other birds never even woke, none the wiser to what had just taken place. Lethe himself couldn't believe what he was doing, as such a thing could get him in grave trouble with the elders, but he didn't care. He empathized with the loner and sought to make her life a little easier, even if it wasn't by much.

......Walking back to her, Lethe dropped the dead bird in front of her. "It may not give you the thrill of the hunt, but it will keep you full." He chuckled lightly under his breath. He was still speaking to an animal. Oh well. "Listen, beast. If you want more food do not raid this area. I won't be here every night and any of the other guards will kill you." He pointed towards a small hut near the other edge of the village, "You will go there, outside of my hut, when the moon is at it's highest point. I will have more for you there. One meal, each night." Who know if she actually understood him. He didn't even understand himself when it came to why he was helping her. "Now, go."

......He snapped his fingers, and the icy bond shattered.

[Flashback] The White Beast Empty
PostSubject: Re: [Flashback] The White Beast   [Flashback] The White Beast EmptyThu May 19, 2011 12:59 pm

Iskra stopped. Ostensibly her progress had been halted by the well-timed application of ice patches to her feet from seemingly nowhere. She did not mind ice much. The matriarch hypothesized that her white coloring had something to do with either death or the snow or possibly both, but what did bother her was the fact that this god had done something she simply failed to understand. It bothered her pride a bit, as he'd done two things so far that she'd assumed he couldn't. Firstly, he had found her in the dark without the aid of the little suns on a stick. Second of all, he'd managed to stick her feet to the ground from a distance. It was surely a thoroughly alien power, but she didn't understand its source and that made it a strange thing of fear and she did not like it. She snarled and snarled at the young man's approach, only quieting when she heard him begin to talk in the human's odd manner of speech. She understood a little bit. Someone who remembered the old way of speaking, that is, someone who was created from the soul of a dead human, though neither of them had any way of knowing that, had taken the time to give her a primer in this manner of speaking, and her preternatural intelligence gave her ideas of what he meant by context.

She did not know what a "guards" was or a "pack" or some of the more complicated words like "thrill", but she did understand "meal every night" and comprehended the gesture of the chicken toss. He meant for her to eat it.

The hyena picked it up gently and tilted her head to the side. He expressed his strength by binding her in place, but not killing her, and he expressed an ability to feed her by tossing the chicken. Through the lens of her past, she mistook his actions for wanting to be her leader.

This designation she did not mentally resist as she didn't mentally resist the matriarch's dominance when she was much younger. She only left that clan because she saw no profit in taking it over, only responsibilities with very limited power. Taking over this young human's clan, however, would profit her greatly. She might even learn the source of his odd powers and, through emulation, improve on it.

But for now, she simply took the chicken, giggling briefly in her species' call before making for the brush again.

It wasn't until she took a few steps in the direction of the woods that she noticed the male human smelled familiar.

Yes, there were only a few humans that the matriarch with her clan had ever attacked.

This was one of them.

The spotted animal stopped cold and took an incredulous look backwards, not believing her thought for the moment.

That little weak thing? That little weak thing that they'd almost eaten had bound her in place like that and was now this big?

It was somewhat a confusing thing for her little hyena mind, and she stood there and stared for quite a few moments.

[Flashback] The White Beast Lethebanner3
..Flashback: The White Beast
..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......In silence, the human watched as the hyena took the meal and began to leave. Previously, he'd felt for sure he would end up feeling bad for letting her firstly live, but then go as far as to actually feed her food that was meant for the village. But, he actually felt quite good about it. Perhaps it was something about helping someone that was in need, even if it was an animal. Then again, it's not as if she probably needed all that much help. If Lethe hadn't just happened to be walking by on patrol when she was there, that chicken would be long gone and neither him nor his comrades would be none the wiser until morning.

......There was something familiar about that hyena, though, even if he couldn't quite put his finger on it. He grumbled to himself, realizing he needed to get back on his route before anyone became suspicious, and he turned and went back to his assigned patrol. He'd report the missing hen in the morning. There was no way he could keep taking chickens for her, so he'd find some other way to make due.

***
......Lethe woke from his peaceful slumber with little start. It'd become a sort of routine for him, in truth. Even if he wasn't due for nightly patrol, he awoke at the same time each night: when the moon was at it's highest point. In addition to getting to see the night sky, he had fallen into a routine of feeding a feral friend of his. He guessed that's what you'd call it anyway. The man was fairly sure you weren't actually friends with animals since they didn't comprehend such things, but they had a good relationship as far as a man and wild animal go. She didn't try to eat him, and in return Lethe gave her one meal under the moon.

......The samurai exited his hut, a container of freshly butchered venison in a leather pouch. The moon was at it's highest point, and it was nearly full. None of the patrols were due near his home anytime soon, so this is why he'd always chosen this time. He was actually surprised the beast was able to understand when exactly to come, but perhaps it was instinct. With a quiet sip of water, the white haired soldier awaited his nightly visitor.

Over time, the hyena settled into a routine of showing up every night for the gift of a chicken every night. She didn't actually need the offering most days. She was a wild animal, after all, not a pet reliant on anything from mankind's table.

But to this table she arrived nightly, sitting gently on the ground next to the chicken coop. It bothered her in a small way to see the white-haired boy as a grown man, and she didn't know if he recognized her from that night or not. This uncertainty gave her a deep-rooted mistrust of him, even as they grew closer.

All of the humans in this area were generally the enemies of her kind, so she only revealed herself to him. The remainder of her spare time she remained hidden, watching the humans from the brush. In time she came to admire her habits. There were some things about them that she preferred to her own upbringing, and the idea of leading one of these villages appealed to her so strongly it was all she could do to not find the leader of the village and challenge him to a contest of strength.

But that was for a later time. For now, she simply lay on her belly, looking over the moonlight frosted village waiting for her new matriarch to appear as he did every such night.

..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......The human actually waited near his home until he'd emptied his canteen of water. It seemed the the hyena wasn't content on this night with walking all the way to his home, and instead was going to take it's time sitting near where they'd met the first night. He couldn't really blame her, after all, because she was just an animal. It wasn't like he was talking to a human, and had given specific orders to a human. He was actually surprised she'd been able to decipher his words and show up the times she had. Lethe tucked away his canteen and took the sack of meats in his hand, making his way through the village and over to the coops.

......He made sure to avoid any patrols, and just as planned they were on the other side of the village by time he arrived at the coup. Sure enough, the beautifully spotted animal sat on it's belly, waiting for the human to bring it it's meal. Somehow Lethe saw this situation as a turn around, where the human was the pet and the animal the master. But he simply reassured himself that wasn't the case, and even if it was this was his good deed for the days.

......"Making me walk all the way over here? Aren't we demanding." The human remarked as he tossed the leather pouch in front of her. Because of the months this had been going on, talking to an animal wasn't so strange to him anymore.

[Flashback] The White Beast Empty
PostSubject: Re: [Flashback] The White Beast   [Flashback] The White Beast EmptyThu May 19, 2011 11:43 pm

The creature stood to her four feet, a certain dignity in the way she stood that told of the shifted relationship between the two. She understood full well that he wanted her to visit his home instead of waiting out near the chicken coop that rested relatively close to the outskirts of town. She simply did not wish to trot through the town or find a route that afforded her a safe passage to and safe escape from his home. Such an endeavor would require her to walk around the town and approach the dwelling from behind.

Now she thought of him less of a creature "in charge" of her, though he still maintained a designation close to her old clan leader in her mind because she doubted she could best him in physical combat, which was the litmus test that she measured authority by. There was the decidedly subservient behavior he showed by bringing her the fresh meat every night.

The fare he had fetched her was nice, however, and she gracefully dipped her head into the pouch, pulling out the delicious flesh and snacking quietly, though messily, on the various kinds. Indeed, she made the several pounds of food disappear in what would have been record time for a human.

Afterwards, however, she did something unusual. For a very long time she had watched the man and the other humans, but her knowledge was still lacking in an area.

She had no idea how to do that thing he had done with the ice, manipulating the elements themselves.

But she also had no way of communicating to him that it was what she wanted to know. It was a perplexing issue. She tilted her head to the side and sat at his feet, looking up into the man's amber eyes and opening her mouth. A harsh laugh occurred, almost a sigh, as though she were trying to imitate his manner of speaking despite being a dumb beast. She flexed her jaws up and down and continued to blow, nothing but growls and giggles issuing forth. It was a difficult situation.

..Flashback: The White Beast
..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......Over the weeks they'd fallen into this routine the cryo samurai had become all but fearless when it came to hyenas. It was true that, for the majority of his life, he'd held a dark and passionate hatred for those animals. Who could blame him for it, anyway? He'd watched his parents get eaten alive like cattle to the butcher by these animals, and hatred would have been the most instinctive human reaction. Often times things don't turn out the way people foresee them, and this was certainly the case. For all intents he would have gone his entire life hating these animals, but because of this single loner he no longer held that grudge. For the life of him, Lethe couldn't figure out why he'd initially begun his relationship with this new pet of his. His emotions told him to kill her that first night, but his mind told him otherwise.

......And so he sat, watching the hyena devour the offering he'd given her. She finished rather quickly, looked at him, and began to make what he could only assume was an attempt to speak. No audible words came out, and the only thing he actually heard was labored breathing, the occasional laugh hyenas were so famous for, and a mixture of growls. It made sense that she couldn't talk, since the vocal cords of such animals were structured much differently than humans. Lethe came closer to her, kneeling down beside the animal and stroking it's back. It had some of the softest hair he'd ever felt. If his dad were here he'd probably want said pelt. Ironic, actually.

......Wait. There it was. That feeling. What was that?

......Lethe stared at the animal for a few moments, his hand resting mid stroke, glancing down at the animal with a quizzical look. "I just had the strangest feeling of familiarity. When I look at you, I feel as if I'm forgetting something..."

Forget. It was one of those words that the others of her kind simply couldn't understand, like truth or love, an abstract concept that had no place among the brutes.

Yet, she was somewhat happy that this concept existed and worked so well with the boy-come-man. She enjoyed the feeling of his hand along her spotted back and even went so far as to encourage the gesture with a certain arching of her back and a more delighted incarnation of her species' chuckle. Originally she'd been quite afraid of that hand, but now she enjoyed the fingers through her coat. It was the sort of contact that she hadn't been getting since striking out on her own. Perhaps she was getting to be emotionally dependent on the human, though she wouldn't admit such a thing to herself. Dependency was a weakness, and weakness led to death.

She looked up into his yellow eyes with her blue ones, her mouth still flexing, though she made no more attempts to breathe words into the motions.

After a time, she simply quit. Perhaps she didn't trust the human completely, as it seemed likely he'd remember at any moment the role she played in the untimely demise of his murderous parents, but she still felt it was right for her to rub her smooth form up against the seated man, an affectionate growl not unlike a purr rising from her chest. Surely her continued kindness would cause him to forget these thoughts of doubt, right?

......It had come to pass that the young man had actually become quite fond of the nightly visits from his wild friend. It seemed that no matter the kind of day Lethe had, the visits would leave much much happier than he would have been wtihout them. Lethe couldn't help but smile at the hyena's reaction to his hand. As a child growing up in the village of the moon he'd never had a pet before, never had an animal companion that would keep him company on long patrols or quiet evenings at home, and while it was true she was still just a wild animal it was the closest thing to a pet he'd ever had in his life.

Suddenly, whatever that feeling he had just a moment ago didn't seem important anymore. "Actually, nevermind, pooch.", Lethe said, moving his hands up from the animal's back to scratching behind the ears. Come to think of it, 'pooch' is something you call a dog. Were hyenas dogs? Or were they feline? A mix of both? As odd as the question may have seemed, it was one he would have used in the decision making process of naming her, should he ever come to that. "I don't suppose you have a name, huh?" He asked aloud, knowing full well she had no way to respond. She hadn't needed a name thus far with him, so he supposed it wasn't too much of a pressing matter.

Now that word she understood... "Name". Though her kind generally didn't relate to such things, she knew her own instinctively. Indeed, when she came into the world it was the only thing she was aware of. It was the last gasp of her mother as she lay bleeding in the dirt.

Her mouth began contorting with more focus and her toothed jowls shoved out a few raspy noises until it formed a few stretched out syllables.

"Iiii--huheeeeh..."

She almost had it out, but her name was designed for ease of speech by demons. Indeed, it had a meaning in the common tongue of the animal spirits.

"Iiiisssk..." She paused to cackle out a breath, standing up on her back legs as she figured out how to say it like a normal human word.

"Iskruh. Iiiskrah. Isk'ra."

Satisfied with her skill in speaking the word, she rested and took a few breaths. So this human language wasn't so hard. It meant "shining," if she knew the word in the common human tongue.

[Flashback] The White Beast Lethebanner3
..Flashback: The White Beast
..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......As Lethe continued to scratch behind the ear of his canine-or-feline friend, it seemed she reacted to something he had said. The animal began to make sounds, seemingly struggling to do whatever it was she was trying to do. It wasn't until she got upon her hind legs did he realize what was going on. Through the growls and failed attempts, an audible word escaped the jaws of her. Iskra. It would seem that she had just responded to him asking what her name was. Lethe wasn't sure if he should be more surprised or awe struck. After all, if there was one thing the young man had never expected to come across in his life, it was a talking dog.

......"So, your name is Iskra?" He asked aloud to the hyena, more than anything repeating the word to see the reaction he'd get from her. "Iskra", he repeated it once more. When he thought about it, it was actually quite a nice name. How did a hyena have a name, much less understand what he was saying to begin with. "Well, Iskra, it seems I've underestimated you. You're quite the extraordinary animal, you know that?" He gave her praise, and continued stroking the animal's back. "I'm not sure if you can completely understand me, but my name is Lethe. Lee. Th. It's a word, according to our village leader that means 'Life'. I was given it from surviving an attack from animals of your kind."

......Lethe paused, realizing that if she could understand him he may have just scared her with what he'd say, since the logical conclusion would be that he hated her kind. "Don't worry, I hold no grudges."

The creature rested for a moment, enjoying the hand behind her ears despite everything. It was a nice moment. She'd managed to convey a word to this person, despite the difficulties of her anatomy working against her.

And yet, she felt a little displeased at the entire situation. How was she ever going to have a productive relationship with him if she couldn't even talk to him with words he could understand? She could understand her clan leader in her past life, but she seldom spoke back. That was because talking was a right of those in the authority. She'd never be able to get authority over him if he was always the one using words and she just had to lay there below him, mute, and listen.

It was frustrating, assuredly, but she didn't believe there was anything she could do about it. Perhaps later she could find the ability to speak. Indeed, among the animal spirits there were those who could talk...

...but she wasn't the same class as they. For now, she decided that words were not important. She could convey her dominance some other way.

Deftly moving from beneath his hand, though she was loathe to stop the pleasurable sensation, she moved up behind the human and placed her forepaws over his shoulders, thrusting her hips forward repeatedly in a manner that would make most men extremely uncomfortable, but among her own kind sent a powerful message concerning the ranks of the two creatures involved.

[Flashback] The White Beast Lethebanner3
..Flashback: The White Beast
..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......The force of the hyena shifting her body from below his hand to putting most of her weight on his shoulders jarred the man from his crouched position, causing him to fall into a sitting position. As if being knocked off your proverbial feet by an animal you thought of as a pet wasn't bad enough, what came next would have been enough to scar any small child for the rest of their life. The fact that he had lost his balance left him worse off than he would have been otherwise, positioning his face almost in the furious path of his furry friend. Lethe very quickly became thankful that she was a female hyena and not a male, for he could only briefly fathom just how immeasurably worse this ordeal would be if she had male genitalia.

......The young samurai fell to his back, causing the hyena's weight and inertia to carry her forward and towards the ground, interrupting her thrusts. With a quick push off with his left elbow, he was able to roll out from under her and out of the path. With a simple kick flip, Lethe was up on his feet and out of the danger zone in a few quick actions. If there was one thing he was more thankful for besides simply being out of the way of that, it was that there wasn't anyone around at the time to see it. Had there been he'd surely never live that down.

......If it weren't for the fact he'd spent so much time around animals growing up within the village, he'd have simply been taken aback by what had just transpired rather than having a vague idea of what had just happened. So, it seemed she wanted to be the one in charge. Lethe simply chuckled under his breath, and shook his head, "Now, now, Iskra. You can't have dominance over me unless you're a little taller and walk on two feet. A weapon or two would help, as well." He jested.

Truthfully, the young hyena hadn't expected her motions to result in her almost sticking her 6-inch member, for only those with extensive knowledge of wildlife could tell a male hyena from a female, into the mouth of the one that fed her. It wouldn't have been a strange gesture for Iskra. Among the hyenas, subordinates often placed their genitalia near the mouths of the more dominant pack members. Fortunately, however, Lethe managed to roll away.

Her path took her forward, somewhat confused. Generally, other hyenas didn't move out of the way of such an expression so dramatically. They either resisted the attempts with bites and ominous snarls, or they submitted. To see the man rolling and flipping about so insistently confused her a bit.

But his next words angered her a bit in the sort of way that would have been sadness were it not for the copious androgens running through her bloodstream. To the human, no doubt, it was just a joke, but to her it was illustrative of a more serious problem. She didn't want to be in charge of a hyena clan. She wanted to be in charge of these more powerful humans, and she wasn't satisfied with the prospect of being forced to return to her species because she couldn't draw respect from the gods.

A bit moodily, she grumbled a low chuckle and began to slink back off into the bush.

..Flashback: The White Beast
..Lethe, the Cryosamurai:
......Had someone asked him why he was attempting to tell a joke to a dog, Lethe wouldn't have had a good answer. There were times during his meetings with Iskra that he seemingly forgot he was talking to a hyena and carried on as if he was speaking to another human being. It wasn't all a bad thing, he guessed, since it showed a certain comfort level with the animal that he scarcely had with most humans. Unfortunately for him, though, it seemed she understood well the content of his joke, and the appropriately irritated Iskra turned and made her way back into the forest.

"Oh, c'mon, Iskra. I didn't mean anything by ... " He voice trailed off as she left the area. Part of him felt bad for seemingly offending the animal, while the other half told him animals couldn't be offended. Whatever the case may have been, he was sure she'd be back the next night as she always was. He'd best leave before anyone comes and questions him about why he was there, among other things. Without sulking too much more on the matter, Lethe picked up the empty leather bag and made his way back to his hut, whistling a familiar tune from his childhood in the process.
