[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Empty
PostSubject: [Quest] The Dark Tower   [Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 EmptyTue Jul 19, 2011 10:08 am

First topic message reminder :

.intro
The sun rose, hardly changing the stubborn gloom above Medius. The sky was gray when the sun when went down, and it was only a lighter grey now. The humans, relic hunters who lived like mice under the austere gaze of the owl, emerged from their hovels, their pickaxes sharpened for another day of digging and prayer. Prayer, lest a monster take another of their number.

Not far from the waking city, an elderly figure emerged. He was half as the diggers were, and half as the monsters. Nobody knew his true age, but he had been grey-haired and wrinkled since the Dawn. He hadn't always been so feeble, however. He knew this because of the bloodstained sword of power that he'd awoken with.

Fate in its cruelty rendered him unable to wield it again. Years of knowledge and experience had vaporized like dew with the rising sun. He knew that the younger, more ambitious entities that rose up with him would want the blade for themselves.

So as a last act, he used a lost and forbidden magic, an instinct in his blood granted to only his brothers and sisters, to form a great tower. It took every ounce of his soul to keep the spell over the sword's prison, and this energy prevented him from being able to defend himself. He was as a normal human.

And the day was coming soon when he'd be unable to maintain his soul's grip on his declining body.

The tower would live on, but he wished to see the warrior who would defeat the building's challenges before his dusk came. This hope awoke him with each unhappy dawn. He looked to the west, puffing serenely on his pipe. Today... yes... he had a good feeling about today.

The Dark Tower
Upon seeing the glyph light up as she touched it, a grin formed on Alicia's features. If she had known sooner that it would be so simple to activate the damned things, she would have done that first. Alas- the riddle made everything much more difficult than it needed to be (as was generally why riddles were used in puzzles like these), and her mistakes had been made. Still, it was better that she had figured out what the gears did sooner rather than later- because if all of the ice had melted and Alicia had gone about smashing the walls then- she wasn't entirely sure if everyone would have had enough time to escape the room.

In fact... Alicia turned back to the contraption- noting the large, fat statue on the far end of the frozen prison. She didn't trust it- nor did she trust it's hammer... nevertheless, she wasn't about to blow his arms off as well. She would simply train an arrow on the man once the radiator was turned on and fire at him should he look like he were about the break the last wall.

At that- the Knight continued onward with the switches- following the conduit made by the activation of the first one to the next one, before once again kneeling and activating the glyph. She simply hoped that her actions didn't put another deadly trap in motion- and, if they did, that she could help as many of the people escape from the trap before it killed them all.

But, hopefully that wouldn't happen.

The second glyph lights up!

The third glyph, however, does not. If Alicia looked back, she'd notice that the outer wall with the first switch on it had become unlit the moment she turned her back on it, and thus the current was broken.

The Dark Tower
Alicia threw her hands up in the air and let out a groan of despair upon noticing the switches had gone out. Taking a deep breath, the Knight returned to the first glyph and activated it, before turning to face the icy prison and it's three guards.

If this tower wanted her to look like an idiot- then so be it.

Sidling along the outlying statues, the Knight walked sideways toward the next glyph, never letting her eyes fall off of the farthest one until she could see the other in her periphery. Upon reaching the second glyph, she would squat down and place her hand on the rune. From there- she repeated the motion to the third glyph, nodding to the Oni, Paguma as she came into his field of vision. She looked rather ridiculous- like a feminine, chainmail-wearing crab as she approached the next glyph- but hopefully this would solve any issues with the whole "turning your back" issue with the statues- seeing as she had one in her relative field of vision at all times- except when the ice prison got in the way- which hopefully would not be enough to reset it.

She squatted down again and touched the last glyph- waiting to see if she had managed to complete the current or not.

The current is complete! Alicia technically never turned her back on the wall.

The gears seem to speed up as the coldness in the room dissolves. However, one of the gears was still stuck and makes a dreadful noise...

"Genius, mi'lady! I think you might have done it!" the cat-man cries, feeling hope for the first time in a very long while.

The Dark Tower
A large grin formed on the Knights features before immediately disappearing once again.

"Yeah... but now what? If I move to destroy the barrier, the glyphs will reset, will they not?" she shouted over the din of the machinery. Turning her body and backing up so she could keep two statues in her field of view, Alicia surveyed the room, frowning. "And breaking the wall first and then going about setting the glyphs would most likely end in my untimely demise..."

Keeping her eyes locked on one of the statues, the Knight returned to where she had left her hammer- in front of Paguma. From there, she walked toward the last remaining wall- keeping her gaze on the hollow statue the entire time and leaving her back turned to the wall she needed to strike. From there, she waited for a moment, watching to see if the current from the statues had stopped flowing- of if the glyph in front of her at least had stopped glowing.

"Hopefully this'll work..." she muttered to herself, gritting her teeth at the cacophonous grinding of the gears behind her.

.the third floor
The room rumbles suddenly.

With the fall of the last gear, the machinery is free to churn. The caulking of the bricks lights up a vivid red that begins at the lines and slowly travels throughout the entire room. Suddenly, it is very warm, but not uncomfortably so.

The ice prison begins rotating again like a turntable in a microwave, and the sound of the great cylinder cracking echoes off of the stone walls.
And it began melting at an incredible pace.

"Oh dear, I do hate water..." the oni murmured. He was still stone, unfortunately, and the melting cylinder might not have flooded the entire room on its own were it not getting help from the holes where the spikes once were.

Rather, the ceiling was pouring some strange, translucent, black substance that combined with the water and darkened it, thickening it into some tar-like goo that was rapidly filling up the entire floor. The rain of gooey corruption continued to pour and didn't show any signs of stopping, though it did have the effect of causing the cylinder to melt more quickly. The armless statue began gibbering again, something about a warm touch finally.

The cylinder melted quickly and it had soon uncovered the mouths of the prisoners so that their screams of terror could commence tearing around the room.

The half-stone man looked extremely uncomfortable. He couldn't really move, but he could drown quite easily, and in the space of a few minutes the mixture would be about his neck. "Mi'lady, perhaps you should quickly go up a floor or two and turn off the faucet? Look there..."

All three of the glyphs around the door were burning bright green, and the door had been replaced with a radiant portal of light.

The dark water was at about waist level. The glyphs were very rapidly fading back to red, and the portal was weakening.

"Please do be careful. Torra is not what she seems. Do not trust her. Go now!"

The Dark Tower
Alicia couldn't help but think she had somehow yet again triggered another trap- yet it seemed as if the black, deadly looking ooze was actually the point of this puzzle- despite the fact that it had begun to fill the entire room. As the screams of the damned began to emanate from the column of ice, the Knight nodded to Yaguma- rushing for the portal that had been created in completing the circuit with the glyphs. "I'll do what I can!" she shouted as she made for the column of light, "So long as there isn't another riddle in the way, I should be able to turn it off rather quickly!"

After slogging through the dark ichor, Alicia finally reached the magical portal as it was dimming. Taking one last glance at the Oni- she nodded and stepped forward into the portal, ready to rush to find the switch for the next layer. It was a bit unsettling, being told that Torra wasn't what she appeared to be- but thus far the Knight didn't have any evidence to back such a statement up. She supposed that the tower would show it's true colors on the next floor, dependent on whether or not she agreed to help the Knight in turning off the downpour of water and slime or if she simply allowed the men Alicia had worked so hard to save drown to death in the murky solution.

.the fourth floor Good Version
The portal of light took the young knight to another one of the bright rooms. This one was different from the last in that bits of the light-emitting paint on the wall had chipped off. Some of them had been tackily glued back into place, and these curled around on themselves in an unsettling manner.

Beyond the paint there was only darkness.

There was a lemonade stand, like the one on the previous floor, but it seemed more... worn. The wood was rotted in areas and termites crawled visibly across the surface. Some sort of aquatic insect larvae inhabited a pitcher on the counter, and over that counter looked an abominable figure. Half of his body was that like one of the gargoyles on the outside of the building. The other half was like a particularly sinister man.

"Awesome! You solved the puzzle!" he cooed.

There was a blue glyph in front of her that would no doubt transport her to the next floor.

The demonic figure poured himself a cup of the maggot-infested lemonade and took a deep swig. "Ah, that's some good stuff. So I like... wouldn't go up on the next floor immediately," his voice was not unlike the stomping approach of a dragon. "There's a bunch of that black goo up on the next floor. It would've drowned you the second you went through the portal if you hadn't opened the drain, and now those people I don't like get to drown instead. Two for one, right?"

Faintly, one could see the substance flowing across the chipped-paint floor and dropping through a drain in the center.

[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Alicia_1

The Dark Tower
Disgusted was one way to describe Alicia's reaction to the room- though it would be a bit nicer to simply state that she was "appalled' instead (wouldn't want to hurt the feelings of the tower that could potentially end her life with the simple thought of doing so) by the state of the room and Torra's new and terrifying appearance. Swallowing her opinions before they could spill from her tongue, she approached the strange entity that controlled the tower, taking note to not accept another bowl of lemonade for a long, long while. "Always a pleasure, Torra. And thank you for the congratulations- I had some help--"

As the spirit spoke, the Knight's features turned more toward concern than disgust. If the tower wanted to punish those people- there probably wasn't very much Alicia could do; not that that had stopped the Knight many times before. Paguma had saved her life, and, as such, she owed the Oni a favor- regardless of his reasons for helping the Knight. "There must be some sort of switch to turn the thing off- or divert it's flow elsewhere, right? I can't let them just die! Even if they are just reincarnated like the rats on the first floor- killing people for the sake of killing them is wrong!"

She slammed her fist on the table near the corner so it wouldn't shatter under her blow- and she leaned forward- "There has to be some way to help them!"

The bat-thing that was apparently Torra pointed to the glyph on the ground. "If you go up to the next floor you'll like... see a glyph in the middle. It'll stop the drain if that's what you like... really want to do. Of course there's like... a puzzle on that floor too and stopping up the drain might make it like... a little harder. Don't tell me you made friends with that weird cat guy." He poured himself some more lemonade. It was thick and coagulated, like yellow blood and puss. The speaker ate the bowl along with the maggot-infested beverage, and crunched away merrily. "He's a total perv."

[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Alicia_1

The Dark Tower
Even before the creature had finished mentioning the switch in the middle of the next room, Alicia was headed toward the glyph that would lead her out of the place. Torra may have been right in stating that Paguma was a "perv"- but that didn't change the fact that Alicia would have never finished the puzzle on that floor without his help. The ooze causing issues for her on the next floor... well- she would have to live with that. Hopefully she would be able to figure out the riddle regardless of the amount of black ichor was left up on the floor above; but her decision had already been made and she wasn't about to let the Oni die just so she could solve another puzzle.

"I will see you in two floors, Torra," the Knight proclaimed as she stepped into the glyph that would take her to the next floor. She simply hoped she hadn't wasted too much time with the slow-talking monster that had replaced Torra- as she had no idea how long Paguma had before the slime covered his head and kept him from breathing. With any measure of luck, the Oni wouldn't have to die via drowning in a gigantic puddle of filth.

.the fifth layer
The instant Alicia touched the rune, she would find herself in yet another black room. It was much like the spike room, except the usual whirring of machinery was very, very distant.

The only light in the room was from two runes. One was blue and was at the very farthest end, affixed to a wall. Near it was another red inscription:
More real than reality
Breathe the darkness in you
The darkness is truth
What do you truly believe in?
Then go...

In the center of the room was an elaborate circular glyph that threw a great deal of light. It threw enough light to make the oily substance falling from the ceiling and into the drain plainly visible. The glyph is blue and obviously the switch to stop the drain. The other glyph on the fair wall is obviously the exit.

Other than that, Alicia might notice that the room's floor is perfectly smooth, though even if she lit up the room, nothing else but the glyphs and the oil and the fact that the floor was apparently black as well would be visible.

[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Alicia_1

The Dark Tower
Wasting no time- Alicia ran for the glyph- noting the inscription and the glyph on the far side of the room as she did so. The ooze fell from the ceiling here as well, it seemed- and blocking the drain may very well end in many more problems than the Knight had originally anticipated up here- but these hitches weren't anywhere near world-ending enough to distract Alicia from the fact that she had to save the strange cat-man two floors below.

Once she was on top of the glyph there was a slight moment of hesitation from the Knight before she touched it. What if she couldn't solve the puzzle before the ichor filled the room here and she drowned to death? The blue glyph on the far wall meant she could leave... but she would not do so unless she absolutely had to. She feared what would happen should she fail the riddle here- as Torra's new appearance was perhaps a precursor of what she truly was? And what of the punishment that the others faced? Would she be placed in a similar prison for the remainder of eternity? Or at least until a better hero than she came and braved the trials of the tower without failing?

Shaking her head, Alicia reached down and attempted to deactivate the glyph. Hesitation would lead to failure regardless- and she had promised herself that she would save the Oni, so there was no room for her to worry about the repercussions of her failure in the first place- as she had already made her decision.

"Hopefully you appreciate this, Paguma. Let's pray that I don't fail here and let you down."

.the fifth layer
The noise of metal sliding against other metal filled the room with a horrible screech.

The blue glyph seemed to shudder, and then it melted.

Yes, it completely melted, and for a passing moment, the room was completely black. Everything went deathly silent.

One by one, a number of slitted eyes, each with a red schlera that was visible, yet cast no light and a red pupil with a black iris, opened. They watched.

There were glyphs that lit up once more. There were 10 of them, and they were large enough to completely circle the room. One of them was green. One of them was red. The rest of them were purple.

It would have been a simple matter for her to simply touch one and go to the next room, except that they began shifting colors at random intervals. At any given instant, however, there was always exactly one green one and one red one.

Similarly, the knight would find that the black substance had begun to accumulate on the floor. It was wet, thick, sticky, and very warm. The substance itself made a soft noise: a suckling or a slurping at the soles of her boots, a noise not unlike a kiss. In moments, it had spread out enough on the floor to completely blot out the light of the glyphs.

[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Alicia_1

The Dark Tower
The thick, wet substance pulled on Alicia's boots without remorse as she slogged through the stuff. It had filled up the floor of the room much faster than she had anticipated- a fact that the Knight was less than pleased about. It also didn't help too much that she could no longer see the different colored glyphs on the floor and that she would have to guess when and where to approach a glyph. Hopefully she wouldn't have to drop down onto her knees in order to activate the runes like she had been doing. Alicia couldn't see things ending very well once the stuff got up to about waist level if she were still on the ground- and drowning was last on her list of priorities.

Sadly enough, she also had very little to go on as far as general pattern with the glyphs- as the inky substance obscured them from her vision too quickly for her to ascertain such things. She could only guess as to where the red and green symbols would be and at which moments- and she didn't have much time to attempt to discover one either. Hopefully she would be given some sort of indication as to whether or not she had hit the wrong glyph though- as she wasn't sure how she could respond if no indication was given to her that she had attempted to activate something.

The eyes were creeping her out as well, simply watching her attempt to come up with a plan beyond "touch the place where the glyphs were before". Perhaps it was simply Torra again- inspecting her as she progressed toward the top of the tower? She shuddered, remembering Torra's new form- not wanting that to be scrutinizing her every move.

At any rate- she approached the nearby wall where she had last seen the green glyph before it had been covered by the warm, black ooze. She stepped on the general location of said glyph and waited for some manner of response to happen.

.the sixth layer Good Version

In a flash, Alicia would find herself suddenly transported to the next level, no part of her body soiled but her boots. A bit of the black substance had managed to get through them and now sucked disgustingly at her feet, having been teleported with her.

At the far end of the room was a lemonade stand. It had been collapsed, ostensibly by the termites from the room previously, but it had been tenderly repaired at points by bones with bits of flesh still attached. These bits of flesh were, of course, being feasted on by maggots and the like. This was visible even from the little bit of light that was coming down from the ceiling.

There was a figure there. Ostensibly the transformation in Torra that began two floors ago had become complete. Now a massive demon stood there. "You like... escaped my pet?" he growled in an amiable manner, as though genuinely surprised to see her standing there. On the counter, there was a pitcher of blood, a cage of small people, and sugar cane. Nonchalantly, the monster took a mortar and pestle, placed one of the clearly distressed people into the bowl portion, and ground him up. He screamed horribly. Torra simply poured the semi-coagulated blood from the pitcher into the bowl, mixing the paste until it became... well, it wasn't quite lemonade, but he drank it.

"Ah, that's like... totally good. Anyways, Inky was really disappointed. Ever since the first floor he'd been wanting to get to know you a little closer. I thought last floor would be the perfect time. He's so sweet on you. It's absolutely adorable. He's too shy to ask, though. I thought I'd just hook him up."

As though appearing on cue, a creature crawled up from behind the desk. It was a very twisted little thing. It crawled with the limbs and upper body of a spider, but trailing hideously behind it were purple tentacles that were black and liquid at the tips, like some sort of melting jellyfish (illustration). Responsively, the ooze on the knight's boots would start attempting to crawl up her leg and into her clothes as the abomination crept to the counter, briefly... licked? from the bowl of blood and gore and, clicking its massive spider-fangs together merrily, started crawling across the black floor towards Alicia. "Honestly, you have been like... a horrible houseguest. You interfere with me punishing all of these people who clearly deserve it... you break my statue... you hurt my pet's feelings... and you keep going deeper and deeper like this. What's wrong with the way things are? I don't want to go back to the world outside of this tower. There's scary demons and bandits and all kinds of stuff I can't fight off because I'm a woman. In here I'm like... free. I can do whatever I want to whoever I want, and nobody can stop me. I'm the queen of these people, and they get to live forever here with me. They don't have to fear death. Even those people who you saved from drowning... you know what? They would have just drowned until the next hero happened along to clear their lungs. It's not my fault that your cat friend didn't want to save them from freezing. This is perfect. You want to just end all that? You want to stop my fun? I thought we were friends..."

A glyph was apparent on the far end of the room, just past the long-winded monster. However, the floor was completely black in front of it, as the light from the ceiling disappeared unnaturally at a short distance in front of it.

[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Alicia_1

The Dark Tower
While Alicia hadn't been expecting to be seeing anything nicer than she had two floors ago- she certainly hadn't counted on coming face to face with such abominations. Whatever trust she had in the spirit was now gone as her eyes met the horror that Torra had become. She watched in disgust as the spirit nonchalantly grabbed one of the tiny people and turned him into a "tasty" drink- the only thing keeping her from interfering being that all of what the Knight was seeing could simply be an illusion created by the tower. Another test of some sort- perhaps?

Regardless of why Torra and her pet had made such a transformation, Alicia wasn't exactly as comfortable as she had been four floors ago. She said nothing as the monster went about her business- crushing people, drinking people, letting her twisted little pet drink people. When the ooze started working it's way up her legs, Alicia let out a yelp and scrabbled to take off her boots- which was now partially filled with some of the inky black substance from the floor below. While she wasn't entirely sure how the ichor had managed to weasel it's way through solid, cured leather that usually kept out liquids of all kinds (water, mud, blood, etc)- but frankly she was too distressed by the black slime working it's way up her calves to ask herself these questions.

When the spider-crab-jellyfish-thing started making it's way across the floor to Alicia, the Knight wasn't entirely sure how to respond. The last thing she wanted to do was piss off Torra by shooting the damned thing- but she also would prefer to not have such a hellspawn crawling all over her as well. Instead of doing anything too drastic- Alicia simply began to move around the room- constantly attempting to avoid the damned thing while Torra went on about how Alicia was ruining her fun and safety. She hadn't been able to clean off as much of the muck as she had wanted to with Inky swiftly approaching- but she was hopeful that what little was left on her would stop trying to make it's way into her trouser legs.

"Torra-" she began- sidestepping the girl's pet, "You were made as a test to heroes like myself. You said so yourself a few floors ago- that you were supposed to test us to see if we would be worthy of receiving the sword at the summit of this place. I am simply completing the tasks set out before me- I have no grudge with you, Torra. In fact- if you're that worried about safety, I can give you shelter on my land when this is all through; but torturing these people is wrong, no matter what they have done to deserve it. If such people are released into the world again because of my actions- then I will make it my personal task to make them repent for their crimes- whether it be by death or some other means."

"I simply cannot allow you to continue this madness... Not while I still draw breath and while I still have a chance to finish the trials set out before me. I apologize for any discomfort I may have brought upon you- but I would prefer to not be stuck in here for eternity. I have people who need me- and I have my own sins to repent for- I'm not going to simply give up just because I am ruining your fun."

.the sixth layer Good Version

The more the woman struggled, the more of the black goo shed from her form. Inky continued forwards. Strangely enough, the black goo, once abandoned by Alicia, was slurped up by the creature as it crawled amiably forward towards her. Reincorporating the black substance, strangely enough, seemed to make the dark thing grow bigger, and past its perpetually, cheerfully clicking fangs was a monstrous grin. It opened its mouth, and there were nothing but black tentacles in its abysmal maw. Alicia sidestepped and it amorously followed her motions, trailing the black slime all over the floor. The black slime itself seemed to be part and parcel of the creature, and it curled into tentacles that sometimes trailed and sometimes moved about the room like so many slugs and sometimes rose up and curled curiously, seeking to gently intercept the knight. Pieces of the floor were soon covered in the swarming pseudopods covered most of the floor.

Torra continued on casually, leaning on one elbow and casually stirring the pitcher of "lemonade" with one hand, a dreamy expression overtaking her monstrous features. "It's like... kind of interesting that you mentioned what I said on the first floor." Inky slurped responsively. A brief look in his multi-eyed face would reveal that they were smaller versions of the eyes that lined the wall on the floor previous. And they watched. Intently. The creature crawled insistently towards his goal, two tentacles poised to grab his prey at the slightest sign of inattention on the part of Alicia. "Paguma used to hold me to that, you know? All three of us used to be friends... it was just me, him, and Inky. He never did like Inky. Like... they got into big fights all the time and I'd always have to get between then. They were both going to leave me, so I like... destroyed all the exits."

She seemed to grow sadder at the thought. "Paguma like... said it was wrong to take away people's free will. Inky showed me it was fun, though. The stuff we did..." the female monster attempted to giggle, but the sound was more like an insane chortle from a blender full of gravel. "Ah, it was like... so much fun. I couldn't believe I'd missed out all this time. Things were so boring when I like... listened to Paguma. He was always about like... guarding the sword because we were like... supposed to. He was just like my dad." The abomination rolled her eyes. "So I try to be nice at first because that's what Paguma would want, but Inky is strongest on the next few floors."

The monster, by now, had become much larger... about the size of a small airplane. The room didn't leave many ways of escape except for the glyph at the far end. "You two should like... probably make friends. He's not much one for talking, though. Oh! I know!" Torra clapped briefly. "I guess I could translate. It's like... he's not evil, I promise. He's just a little... like... ummm... free."

The light in the room seemed to be dimming.

The Dark Tower
So- Torra was being manipulated to some extent by her "pet"? Interesting...

Still, this was not the place to think on such things; not with little Inky getting to be much larger than little. Alicia maneuvered her way around the abomination before her- watching the monster as it clicked happily about the room and waved it's tentacles at the Knight. The last thing she wanted was to get caught by this thing- not with the look it was giving her. Knowing now that it was some sort of demonic spirit rather than Torra's personal corruption that made the tower this way (although Torra was indeed corrupt based off of what she had said moments before)- Alicia moved toward the glyph with renewed sense of drive. There was still some measure of good in Torra (or so Alicia hoped), and making her way to the top of the tower would hopefully give Alicia the object necessary to free the girl from her "pet".

"Sorry Torra," she said as she approached the glyph on the far wall, "But I'll have to reschedule making friends with Inky. Once I reach the top of the tower we'll have plenty of time to talk... In fact- I'll make you this promise as well-" She turned away from the rune momentarily to bow lightly and clasp her hands in an odd manner (probably some sort of symbol of respect or honor or something) to Torra. "Once I make it to the top, I will either wait to chat with you and your friend before claiming the sword or I will give you something new to protect with this tower... provided you at least allow me to release a few of the individuals you have imprisoned here and you don't outright attack me." Looking up from her short bow (and keeping an eye on Inky, who was no doubt getting closer), she backed toward the glyph and smiled before touching it.

"Knight's honor."

.???

Alicia disappeared before Torra could really respond. It was just as well. The demon had become rather set in her ways, though in her heart of hearts, she could feel a shift of compassion towards the kind lady knight.

The next "room" appeared much larger than its fellows. That is, it wasn't a room at all, but an expansive ruin like the ones that were common outside. Rather, if Medius had a flood on a moonlit night, it might appear similar to the fallen stone jungle all around. A disrupted asphalt street was lined with tall, ominous, dark buildings that stood to either side of the road like dark sentries or caves. Inside of them, no light was visible, though if she paused to listen, she might hear a chittering not unlike the sound of Inky coming from the impenetrably dark abysses behind the ominous windows and doors. The labyrinthine city had no apparent end. Each road led to numberless branches. Each one was punctuated with ruined street lights and crooked green signs with seemingly meaningless white markings. Each set of markings on the signs were unique.

Useless machines lined the street and sidewalks at odd angles. They were dark inside, though all of the darkness in this place was because of the paucity of moonlight and not from any apparent malign influence. If she approached the vehicles, however, she might hear a familiar sucking noise.

The area was completely empty. The loneliness of it seemed to have a weight. Other than the sound of the soft breeze that occasionally picked up and pushed a few fliers and pieces of trash down the road and the odd noises from the darkness, there was nothing. The fliers, if picked up and closely observed, were some form of lewd advertisement written in the odd, ancient tongue common in the ruins (illustration).

If she looked up for long enough at one of the nearby buildings, she might notice a huge, draconic shape. It was exactly the same color as the buildings, and completely still. It might be a statue. It might be the way out. It might provide some clues. Or it might be an actual dragon. It was very high up and very, very large.

The sky was starless. There were softly glowing, grey clouds in the sky that provided the ambient light.

There were many dark puddles of what appeared to be polluted water or oil all around. Some of the puddles were as small as a golf hole. Some of them were a full three feet across. They lay at the bottom of the sections where the black road was broken. They moved sometimes. It was probably just the wind.

Above Alicia would be a stoplight. She was in the middle of an intersection. There were four roads in the cardinal directions. Visibility was limited because of the poor light. The piece of asphalt she originated on would slope down to a very large puddle that was perfectly avoidable. In fact, none of the puddles impeded her progress.

Objective! Progress

[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Alicia_1

The Dark Tower
Ruins. Of course there were more ruins. Alicia's world seemed to be filled with nothing but ruins of civilizations that had once been great and powerful- and while the Knight did not resent this fact, it did make her curious as to what the world used to be like before the Dawn.

Taking in her surroundings as well as she could- Alicia decided it would be her best bet to head toward the sizable dragonoid statue atop one of the towers in the distance. At least... it seemed to be the only place she could go as of now. The advertisement she had seen when she first arrived was unreadable by her- so she couldn't have headed in that direction- not that she'd want to head toward any place where clothing was "optional". With a deep breath- she began to walk toward the spire.

Puddles, it seemed, were an ever-present threat as well. From a young age, she had been told not to trudge through the small collections of water- though instead of doing so to remain clean it was so she didn't get any water on her armor so it did not rust through. However- the puddles reminded the Knight a bit too much of the black ichor she had seen two floors before (and again two floors prior to that)- and upon being reminded of the slime she also recalled the beast that absorbed and produced it. Whenever she was able- she would take as far of a route beyond the puddles as she could- sticking closer to the smaller ones than the larger ones when it was necessary to cross them.

With any luck she would be able to reach the dragon in a half an hour or so- including climbing all of the stairs required to reach such a height. She only hoped that a more obvious danger did not present itself between now and then as well.

PostSubject: OOC: I'll just assume she went into a building to climb the stairs since nothing notable would happen between her walking in the city and her attempting to climb the stairs.   [Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 EmptyTue Aug 16, 2011 10:45 pm

.uh oh...

Absolutely nothing eventful happened until Alicia ventured to attempt to climb the stairs.

The first thing that would be apparent when the young knight stepped into the room where the stairs would be was the prevalent darkness. There were solutions to that, of course, but the door seemed to shut rather heavily behind her. After all, doors that shut with hostility had been a reoccurring theme in the journey. On the distant end of the room was a dilapidated old elevator that nevertheless remained lit by a flickering fluorescent light. This was perhaps a hundred or so yards off. Every once in awhile, the light was interrupted by a passing, dark shape. The shape was roughly canine, definitely bestial, and about six feet at the shoulder.

When the door slammed shut, the odd, clicking noise picked up perceptibly. There were howls not unlike moans that quickly joined the insectoid cacophony, though their source was still concealed by the surrounding black.

Two by two in the vast first room floor, red eyes lit up. They were not unlike the eyes that had wanted to watch Alicia drown earlier... that is, they had glowing, red scleras; black irises; and red, slitted pupils.

They quickly began to circle the woman hungrily, though the somewhat wistful expressions on their faces was concealed until their faces lit up with a red, hellish fire and they stood to their hind legs. Certain parts of their anatomy were ridiculously large. In fact, the way they moved implied some form of lycanthropy that imbued them with properties of nightmarish stallions. Their ribs glowed red and their mouths hung open, venting fire and smoke. There was no soul in their eyes. The chains around their necks rung lightly with their motions, and their long claws were yellow and black with filth and sickness.

The dozen or so of the tortured beasts were plainly quite happy to see Alicia. When the last of them awoke, the room was flooded with a sterile, red light that revealed everything. There were sixteen of the monsters that still slept in uncomfortable positions on the floor. A few spots on the floor weren't red. These were puddles similar to the ones outside, though they were considerably larger, forming pits in the tiled floor. The ceiling was far off and difficult to see. Rather, it seemed to be a sky and an atmosphere of black rather than a discernible roof, and the red light shone vividly from the thousands of watching, scarlet eyes that seemed to have suddenly punctuated the ceiling. There were bar stools scattered around, and a great number of the fliers from outside.

The beast immediately in front of the woman hissed, twisting his head as though the metal collar about his monstrous neck was burning him. "A... female?" he hissed. "Master... will be most pleased..."

The puddles quivered responsively and eventually formed waving tentacles about the room. The clicking and the sucking became even louder, throbbing at an excited pace.

The other beasts howled in agreement, agreeing with the first. "Most pleased." "Certainly yes." "We should please him." "He is never pleased." "He will be pleased now."

The lead creature took a step forward. "Tell me, female... you wear those... coverings. They madden."

The others rejoined like some infernal chorus, shrieking. "It hurts! It hurts!" "The madness!" "Why is she wearing that?" "It's making me hot just looking at it!" "A perversion of nature!"

The beast took another step forwards. "You are like us. Forced to wear these things and never be free."

"We will free you!" "Be free, female!" "Our master will be pleased!"

The lead monster is about ten feet away. The rest of the beasts circle her at about a dozen foot radius, though that circle begins to close slowly. "Come female. We must feed you to the darkness."

"It hungers!"

Behind Alicia is the door she came through originally. It slammed shut, possibly from the wind. Maybe it could be opened if she had the strength to push past one of the beasts. She might not have the strength. Ahead of her is the elevator still. Maybe she could seek safety in there, provided she could run past the lead beast. There was always the option of trying to fight off the dozen or reason with them. Either way, a quick decision would have to be made.

[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Alicia_1

The Dark Tower
Alicia always seemed to find herself in these terrible situations. She didn't understand as to why she couldn't simply go from point A to point B without running into every Demon in Hell and then some- or catching the interest of a dragon- or being stared down by umpteen corrupted lycanthropic horsemen who seemed intent on raping the ever-loving shit out of her. Or allowing good ol' Inky to rape the ever-loving shit out of her. Either way there was a lot of unwarranted penetration that would be going on that Alicia simply could not stand for.

What surprised the Knight more than the prospect of having her body pillaged by the horrible monster that was Inky (frankly, by now it didn't really surprise her at all), but the fact that the light inside the elevator was on. She knew what the things were used for- having traveled through Medius hundreds of times in her lifetime- but she had never seen one in working condition. From what she understood about the machine- there was some sort of pulley system that activated after you pressed a button- pulling the box upward until you reached your destination with it. Aside from that even, Alicia and her scouting groups had been trained from a young age to simply break through the ceiling of one of the boxes and to climb the thick wires to reach higher floors- so even if this one didn't work, she was more than capable of making her way up regardless.

"Hate to break it to you- but pleasing your master once or twice isn't going to change anything for you lot." Drawing he bow- the Knight nocked an arrow before continuing, cocking her head to the side to get a better view of the elevator, "And standing in my way is only going to result in a rather sizable amount of pain for you as well- Horseman. I'd suggest stepping out of the way so no one gets hurt."

Regardless of what the beast before her did in response, Alicia bolted forward, firing an arrow past the lead monster's head before pulling another one out of the quiver around her waist- keeping it in her hand as a stabbing implement should any of the fiends get ahold of her before she could make it to the elevator. The bolt she had fired was not meant to kill the lycanthropic monster, seeing as she assumed one could take a rather sizable blow to the face- but to make the thing flinch so she would be able to slip past the monster. Hurting the poor souls trapped in this hellish place one of the last things the Knight wanted to do- but she also could not be sure that they had not been corrupted past the point of no return- where they had simply become little more than shells. If worst came to worst, Alicia could always slit her throat with one of her arrows- seeing as being imprisoned in the Tower seemed to be a fate worse than death at the moment.

Perhaps if she were lucky, Torra would intervene on her behalf as well? Alicia wasn't entirely sure about it- but it was a glimmer of hope nonetheless- seeing as despite the amount of corruption in the spirit, Torra had still allowed the Knight to scale her tower. Or she could try to reason with the monsters, hoping that some glimmer of humanity was left within their corrupted souls.

.in the dark of the night

The monsters never moved their eyes from the woman. Even the arrow that flew past the first monster's face failed to distract him. They moved stiffly and with resolve, like zombies as they crawled forwards towards the knight.

"Why do you run?" "We love you." "We love you a lot, female." "Freedom." "Yes." "Pleased."

They continued to murmur in the background as they drew up behind her with surprising speed. They weren't that much faster than her, but they didn't seem to be trying to impede her progress any. They simply surrounded her on the sides and the behind, staring... staring... growling and licking their lips and whinnying as horses do, their ember-emitting nostrils flared.

"We will not hurt you."

Inside the elevator, there was a sword embedded in a small pile of rubble. The light shone down almost divinely upon the shining metal, contrasting strongly with the red light of the room.

"Do not touch the sword," the monsters warned from seeming inches behind her. "It will hurt you." "It hurts us." "It hurts." "Do not do it."

[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Alicia_1

The Dark Tower

Alicia's first thought upon noticing the blade was to wrench it free and triumphantly proclaim her victory over the tower. However, once rational thought set in (as well as the terror-inducing whisperings of the horse-men behind her), the Knight realized that she still had two more floors to go until she reached her destination. Even if this blade WAS the sword she was searching for, her victory would be in vain as the tower would still, most likely, stand until all of it's trials were completed.

That, and she wasn't going to take the sword knowing now that it may well be a trap.

So, instead of pulling the sword out of the elevator, the Knight used the weapon as a foothold to reach the ceiling of the metallic box she had found herself in- punching out the hatch at the top of it and pulling herself through in one fluid motion. Upon making it into the elevator shaft, Alicia turned around and mumbled a short incantation- a new spell she had been developing, but had by no means gotten the hang of yet. Should her improved barrier work, she would place it over the hatch she had just entered through. If not... well- the horse-men's progress would simply be a little less impeded. Fortunately for the Knight they would now have to come at her one at a time through the small hole- and even then they would have to catch her once she began her ascent to the roof.

Instead of going for the cable attached to the elevator to climb up- Alicia made her way to the walls surrounding it. Upon finding a decent hand-hold, she hoisted herself up and began a long- slow climb to the next floor. With any luck she could find some stairs there- and a hell of a lot less fervent horse people who were hellbent on giving Alicia's body to the malignant, demonic ooze. Hopefully.

.in the dead of the night

The beasts watched Alicia walk into the elevator and hissed angrily, pacing back and forth, helpless to do anything about it...
... until she punched out the ceiling, cleanly extinguishing the light.

"She lifted the curse!" they proclaimed in unison, referring to the light that had repelled them from the elevator previously, as they crept forward into the aperture, staring up at her form for as long as they could before she disappeared into the elevator shaft. "The female is such a wonderful creature." "She goes to our master." "He will be pleased." "Her behind is round." "I like her behind." "It's like an apple." "Yes, round." "I cannot see it." "Neither can I, but I assume that it is round." "I would like to touch it. To see if it's soft."

The most prominent thing in the shaft was the large, red eye that stared down, the one that matched Inky's and the horse-men's.

In fact, the holds Alicia could find on the elevator were noticeably wet. Black water dripped down the walls and the pulleys of the lift until they pooled at the bottom and formed familiar tentacles.

Of course, none of this would be observable unless the barrier that the knight had deployed earlier shed any light on the situation.

The odd substance would climb down her arm and up her shirt sleeve, wrapping itself around her body. More would get in her clothes if she didn't take her hand off of the wall.

Then again, if she did take her hand off of the wall, she'd fall immediately into more of the black substance, which had solidified itself at the bottom of the shaft and formed a large pool of gel. This would considerably worsen the situation. It was possible, though unlikely, that she could swim through the goo and get back down through the hole into the eager arms of the werestallions.

The walls were suddenly lined with red eyes underneath the translucent, black goo. Creatures made of the corrupt substance, each with a single, red eye, stopped their crawling on the shaft. They stared at her and smiled. Their teeth were very white (For Reference: link).

The entire shaft of the elevator turned red and throbbed like a heart. A purr filled the area.

Below the purr was a voice, though it was so very, very faint. It was a familiar voice.

"Mi'lady! Don't despair! Whatever you do!"

[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Alicia_1

The Dark Tower
This was the last goddamned straw.

While Alicia may have only been completely sure of the spirit known as "Inky"'s malicious intentions the floor prior, she was sick and tired of the thing's increasingly threatening attempts to have it's way with her. First filling an entire floor with the ooze that made up most of it's body (she was sure that had luck not been on her side there would have been very little she could have done, then chasing her around a "safe-room" while the Knight tried to carry on a conversation with Torra, then sending twenty horse-men after her and now this bullshit. It was one thing to be a nuisance- but it was quite another to stalk someone incessantly throughout an inescapable tower where a sword of legend lay at the top, endboss or no.

Alicia would have dropped off of the wall and fired a few arrows into the godforaken thing's eye before breaking her spinal column on the steel box beneath her- provided the tentacles didn't catch her and pull her apart beforehand. However- the Knight was far from suicidal, even if she was incredibly pissed at the whole situation. From her current position, things looked rather grim- ooze covering the walls, the ceiling and the floor with glowing red eyes watching her every move as well. The Knight longed for her sword- any sword- to grab onto, to give her reassurance that she could get through this trial.

However, the only things she had were her hatred of the demon, her will to press forward and a tiny voice in the back of her head telling her not to give up. A tiny voice that sounded vaguely gentlemanly and catlike.

"Paguma...?"

It appeared that unfreeing the strange cat-man had given him some bit of freedom throughout the tower again- or at least the ability to speak through several floors. A glimmer of hope shone through the rage and helplessness that pervaded Alicia's thoughts. If he could speak to her, he may be able to help her against the terrible monster that was "Inky". She wouldn't count on it- but she wouldn't give up- not with a potential ally backing her up. With increased vigor, Alicia shouted a few syllables and continued climbing her way through the goo- activating her shield as she plowed through the muck.

"I swear to the Fates, Paguma- if that's not you, I'm going to go back down there and kick your catty ass!"

As Alicia continued to climb, it would be apparent that someone several stories up was attempting to pull open the elevator doors.

After a moment, the doors nearest the eye at the top of the shaft creaked open, jerking and shuddering and making a horrible screech as they did.

Now also looking down at her progress was none other than Paguma. The cat-man took a brief look at the creatures climbing all around and down at the rising goo with its tentacles sprouting forth. "Oh dear! It's almost got you! Let me find something..."

His head disappeared for a moment. For another few minutes, Alicia would be alone in her climb... well, except for Inky and the dark substance all around. Alicia's shield successfully halted the further progress of the liquid down her sleeve, but that didn't stop the goo's attempts. It draped itself over her shield thick enough to impede vision. The slight amount of goo that had made it in before the shield was erected crawled alarmingly around her torso, sucking at her flesh audibly at points, its aim to shock her into letting go of the wall or at least slowing her down with its distraction and let the approaching wall of liquid catch up to her and drag her under long enough for the shield to give out. This was the second time the substance had demonstrated its ability to ooze through her armor despite its metal composition.

Then again, it didn't take much eyesight to climb. It would take eyesight, however, to see the rope that the cat oni eventually dropped down. "I found a rope, gentle knight! Grab a hold and I'll pull you up!"

If Alicia dropped her shield, it might cause the goo on the shield to drop as well, allowing her line of sight to the rope while running the risk of the waterfall of goo on the wall invading her person. There was the option of keeping the shield up, allowing her safety as she more slowly climbed the wall. Then again, the wall of goo behind her might be approaching fast enough to make climbing the rope the only safe way out. It would be hard to tell without sight.

Objective! Probably to reach Paguma

[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Alicia_1

The Dark Tower
While she was relieved to hear Paguma on the higher levels of the building, Alicia was far from safe where she was now. Not only was the slime impeding her vision- but it was also worming around under her clothes, slowing the Knight's progress whenever she had to stop and shudder or let out a brief cry of surprise when the black stuff crawled around her body. She couldn't see- she could hardly hear the cat-man as he shouted to Alicia. It seemed that, despite making it as far as she had, the ooze would claim her and she would be yet another prisoner in the Tower. Yet, Alicia wasn't the type to simply give in when shit hit the metaphorical fan. She had fought a dragon- then gone back to fight it again after it nearly burnt her to a crisp. She had taken on a compound of bandits with only two other people and came out relatively unscathed; surely this dark place wouldn't be the end of her- not after she had fought so hard to make it this far.

Her hand slipped. Her shield faltered. She let out a cry of terror as Inky began to seep through the patches forming in her barrier.

In her desperation something changed within the Knight- not dissimilar to the power she felt when she had activated her spiritual "artifact" while she was fighting the dragon; only much more powerful. A brilliant, golden light erupted from Alicia's body- flying to the heaves before being immediately joined by gale force winds that whipped the goo across the shaft. Some of the energy coalesced into a set of armor- which didn't impede the Knight's movement for some reason. Strength welled up inside her- and golden light poured off of her body in a brilliant display as her hair grew longer and turned a deep shade of red.

Yet another completely unexpected, but altogether greatly appreciated surprise.

Re-erecting her barrier with another short chant- Alicia leapt for the rope before her- which was being blown around by the winds that had been summoned forth by her transformation. Catching the end of the rope, she hoisted herself up with one hand and began her ascent toward the cat-demon.

The ooze splattered against the wall with a disgusting, wet noise. Well, all of the ooze except for that under her armor. The pressure simply pressed the thick fluid against the woman's chainmail, and as soon as the transformation sequence was over, it continued its wriggling, eventually draping itself over her chest much like the unwanted hand of a thief.

Paguma pulled when he felt the weight of the knightess on the rope, and between him pulling and her climbing, she was in safety within seconds.

The catman fell to his rear end and panted. They were on the roof. The tremendous, grey dragon-shaped thing was just behind them. The elevator apparently ended on the roof level. The dragon didn't move at all as Paguma asked her, "Mi'lady, are you okay?"

The elevator doors creaked shut. A disappointed hissing could be heard from within, though the ooze against the woman's intimate parts failed to dissolve and in fact began moving down.

The Dark Tower
The transformation ended almost as abruptly as it began- her shining armor falling off and disintegrating and her hair returning to it's normal length and hue. Instead of responding to the cat like a civilized human being, Alicia simply shouted at the man to turn around and began tearing off her chainmail and any other clothing that got inbetween her and the ooze that was squirming about her body, regardless of Paguma's gender and the potential live dragon that was a few feet away. After being reduced to little more than her trousers, she clawed at the slime- attempting to remove it from her body as quickly as possible- cursing and growling in a rather unladylike fashion until all of the inky stuff was removed; whereupon she would shudder, go back to her discarded clothes and put them back on without looking at the demon.

"My thanks, Paguma. I shudder to think what would have happened had that thing gotten ahold of me." Dropping to one knee and bowing her head, her hands clasped before her, she quietly said, "I owe you a great debt."

All formalities aside- Alicia stood back up and brushed herself off- making sure her armor was comfortably set and that her bow had not been lost in her hasty ascent. After being satisfied with that, Alicia took a deep breath and looked for a place to sit down- looking absolutely exhausted. "So..." she began, "What now?"

Paguma blinked at first. "Mi'lady, what are you--"

After the first few curses and the modesty-protecting chainmail came flying off, the demon decided it didn't matter. At the first glimpse of bare flesh, he turned away and shifted his robes a bit, slightly embarrassed despite his race.

The dragon, however, moved. He looked down interestedly at the woman, smoke coming out of his nostrils. His eyes were the same as Inky's.

Paguma held up a hand to the beast. "That's enough. You can do whatever you want on the next floor when I'm not here. I just ask that you let me talk to her a bit."

The dragon rolled its black and red eyes before resuming its former posture, staring out over the city.

Paguma resumed his interrupted conversation. "It was the least I could do, mi'lady. Your kindness awoke the human in Torra, and that's the only way I got enough power to come help you."

The man assumed a more relaxed posture against the ground in lieu of standing up. "I suppose I owe you an explanation. This place..." He waved his arm briefly. "...is deep in someone's heart and mind. This is the seat of emotion. It's why Inky's so strong here. All of this... you see it don't you?" He indicated each thing with his hand as he spoke of it. "It's loneliness. Ever since this tower came into being... loneliness. Prisoners to combat the loneliness. That dragon is the fear of death. It's what keeps us imprisoned here. Fear of becoming a mortal again. These buildings... they're made to house repressed emotions. Lusts. Rages. Things that make him a bad person." He sighed and looked up at the still form of the dragon. "But above it all is the fear of death. Inky is all of these things. Does this make sense?"

[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Alicia_1

The Dark Tower
The fact that Inky was also the gigantic dragon atop the tower made Paguma's appearance all the more appreciated by the Knight. She shuddered to think what would have happened had she somehow made it to the top of the building only to find that she now had to deal with the demon in dragon form- the very idea of which made her blood run cold. Inky as a terrible spider/octopus/ooze was terrifying enough- but adding a dragon form to the mix seemed simply unfair and terrifying to the Knight. Thankfully, Paguma seemed to have enough power to keep the other demon at bay- at least for the moment, which allowed the strange cat-man to explain things a bit to Alicia.

Confusion and surprise predominated Alicia's features for the next few minutes as the cat-man divulged the secrets of the tower. Something about how he and Inky were opposite ends of the spectrum for human emotion- Inky being all the bad things and Paguma being the good ones. The current floor was the center of someone's mind and body- where one kept his/her emotions and fears- which meant that Torra was an actual person as well as the tower Alicia had been climbing; though whether or not Inky and Paguma were actual demons now was a bit of a mystery to the Knight. Regardless, while she understood everything Paguma said- she wasn't necessarily able to process the information well. She was already new to the world of magic and mysticism- and the fact that the world she had been fighting through was some manifestation of personal self simply blew everything she thought she knew about sorcery right out the door.

Once Paguma was done speaking, the Knight was silent for a moment, staring off into space before collecting her thoughts and returning her gaze to the cat demon. "What you're saying is rather... Well, frankly it just seems unbelievable." She shook her head before bringing one of her hands up to her forehead and massaging her temples, "And it's not that I don't believe you- it's just rather overwhelming to consider." With a sigh, she dropped onto the ground before the cat man, pulling her knees up to her chest and frowning.

"And if Inky is all the bad in Torra- does that make you all of the good? And what happens to the lot of you should I successfully retrieve the sword from this place?"

.the seventh floor
The cat demon shook his head gently. "It's not so simple. Perhaps I should start from the beginning."

"Torra's father was not only the owner of the great sword, but he was a powerful psyche magician. All in his clan were. We were two demons, Inky and I... well, neither of us had names. We were wild demons with no sentience, and we were captured and sacrificed."

"You see, mi'lady, Torra's father had a theory that the creatures of the world, much like the realm itself, were divided into three entities. We were our conscience, that small voice that tells us to do right and reminds us to do what would make our ancestors proud. We are our passions that tell us to eat and procreate and sleep. Last of all, we are our reason, which attempts to reconcile the two irrational forces and interacts with the real world."

"The father didn't trust a single entity to be able to guard the sword. Conscience might move him to mercy. Passion might move him to favor. So he sliced those things away from his son's mind. I was sacrificed to house his conscience. Inky was sacrificed to house his passions. Torra was left only with his reason, and he was made the ruler of the both of us. We are bound to his mind until the tower ceases to be."

"But over time, he began to lose sight of reality... after all, what is reason in a realm where anything you think is the truth? He became mad."

"Madness goes with passion. Inky was fine with this and encouraged it. I tried to stop it, and they sealed me on a floor and altered the puzzles."

"Which is where you saved me, kind woman. I will always owe you my thanks."

"However, I must warn you. Everyone who has come into this tower and allowed it to drive them insane will be trapped in their insanity and bound to that of this tower. It is why I told you not to despair and why you must keep your wits about you. The sword and the herbs around it are the catalyst that keeps the spell in place. It keeps us all bound to Torra's mind: me, Inky, and the prisoners. To free us all, you must liberate it."

"I thought I might not have to tell you these things," he stood to his feet. "But now I see that you have what it takes. It seems I am as biased as his father originally feared."

With a gesture towards the ground, Paguma caused a green rune to appear. "There isn't much time. You must go."

The Dark Tower
Standing up and dusting herself off, Alicia nodded to to the demon, checking her gear once more before nodding to the man. She still found this whole deal rather surreal and quite impossible to imagine- yet Paguma had no reason to lie, and she saw no other readily available truth before her. Hopefully once everything was said and done and she had (hopefully) retrieved the sword, she would be able to meet up with the strange cat demon once more to speak with him on his years of confinement. If he still had a corporeal body. And being "released from their prison" didn't actually mean sending them all to the afterlife.

"One more thing before I go," she said as she approached the glyph Paguma had created, "Can you tell me anything about the next floor? Anything useful should Inky prove... problematic once more?" After waiting for his response, the Knight would nod once more to the demon and let out a slight grin before stepping onto the portal. "Should we both make it out of this alive, I'm buying you a good mug of stout first chance we get. See you on the other side."

The Dark Tower
"Uh..."

Alicia simply stared at the headless woman for a moment, unsure of what exactly to do. There was no visible glyph, and therefore no visible exit- so the only thing the Knight could actually do was watch the headless woman pour herself a bowl of what could only be urine, judging from the sour aroma it gave off. After receiving a sort of weird wheezy greeting from the headless woman, Alicia approached the table, keeping an eye on the small octopus creature as she did so.

"Torra? What in the Fates..."

[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Alicia_1

The Dark Tower
The terror of the situation was readily apparent on the Knight's features, as Torra was brutally raped before her. Inky climbing into her throat was terrifying enough- but the production of the black sludge- the appearance of another horse monster as well as an alarmingly large amount of the toothy slug creatures. There was very little Alicia could do for the poor girl as well- aside from launching an arrow into her slime-covered form and ending her life; a mercy killing, if you will. But, Alicia had no idea whether or not killing Torra in his/her mind would actually kill him/her- and she didn't want to take that chance- not while hope still remained for his/her freedom.

It was also somewhat distressing to note that the horse-men were also manifestations of Inky- and thus probably very hard to kill as well. After all, as far as Alicia could tell there was absolutely nothing she could do against the black ooze aside from running away from it.

"Just hold on, Torra!" she shouted- drawing her bow and firing an arrow into the head of the horse man before stepping onto the blue glyph, "I'll end this!"

Torra screamed when the arrow entered the werestallions' head... or maybe it was the werestallion's scream. It seemed to be coming from more than one place as the black liquid oozing from between the woman's shoulders was joined by a few spots of white.

The next floor really didn't have much on it. Just a man with a very large sword. He looked somehow artificial. A red eye marked the door above where he stood. He stood in front of a door. Obviously, this were close to the end.

"Why do you want our sword, woman?"

[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Alicia_1

The Dark Tower
Due to the steady increase in the amount of terrifying/horrifying things that had happened within the tower since she had first entered it, Alicia half-wondered if the natural world could ever properly frighten her again. Hence, seeing the man stained in blood, holding a rather sizable sword and a rather severed head didn't really bother Alicia near as much as the prospect of being terribly raped by a creature sacrificed to be one's passions in life. She was a little disturbed- she gave him that much, but overall it was a lot less terrifying than she had anticipated the penultimate floor to be.

The eye looked somewhat familiar though...

When the masked man spoke, Alicia was snapped out of her silent pondering. Why she wanted the sword? Well- aside from not knowing it existed in the first place, Alicia needed a sword to do what she did best, she supposed. "I require the blade to protect- to serve as a barrier between those too weak to fend for themselves against the monsters of our world. And, I would be lying if I didn't say that I missed the feel of my sword at my hip... but it has always been my purpose to serve and protect- and thus that has always been my weapon's purpose as well."

.the ninth floor
The figure didn't move at first, but when it did, it was to drop the head on the floor. It fell on its back, and it became obvious that the head was Torra's.

"I'll be straight with you, dutchess," the figure continued nonchalantly, walking forward as its skin sloughed off and became a hoodie and its face became perfectly smooth and grey. Its eyes were like insects', but inside of them was that same black-and-red motif. Inky's trademark along with the tentacles.

Speaking of which, the ground suddenly lost its solidity, and Alicia would be held in place as her enemy approached. "The cat told you the truth. We both want to get out of here, but we can't move the sword. We're both demons. Yea, yea, I tried to get you and stuff, but honestly, I didn't think you could've make it this far without help, and you were such a little cutey." The tentacled beast invaded her personal space to some extent. His featureless, bug-eyed face was mere inches from hers and his tentacles were dripping all over the place. "If you really want to move it, then I'd be happy to let you. After all..." The corners of his face where his mouth were supposed to be drew up, as though he were grinning. "You're such a little angel. I'd rather have you in real life." The thing turned and walked back towards the door. "I might let you go, though, duchess. There's plenty of women like you out there, and I guess I owe you one for getting me out of this dump, yea?"

With a brief kick, the door flew open, revealing a staircase behind it. "That'll take you up to the sword. Take it and it's yours. See you on the other side."

And with that, the monster simply walked off into the light brown ether of the room.

[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Alicia_1

The Dark Tower
Well, clearly she had jumped the gun in thinking that the man carrying the sizable sword was not as off-the-wall horrifying as the rest of the tower had been. Of course it was Inky. The fact that she hadn't expected that in the slightest slightly disturbed Alicia... Perhaps she had begun to lose her touch? Or maybe she was merely exhausted from the tower.

Regardless, Inky had posed an even larger problem than she had originally assumed it to be. For whatever reason, Alicia hadn't been expecting the ooze demon to leave the tower immediately after she pulled the sword free. In fact- she didn't even think Paguma and Inky still had corporeal forms- but the prospect of releasing such evil into the world... She shuddered to think of what could happen.

Not to mention the ever-looming threat of rape from the godforsaken thing.

That being said, leaving the demon locked up in here would only make the situation worse for everyone else. If Torra wasn't already dead right now, then he/she'd be driven so far into insanity that he/she may as well be; not to mention the dozens, if not hundreds of prisoners that were being held here simply because they failed the trials. What right did Alicia have to condemn them to further imprisonment, even if it did mean letting an unspeakable horror loose to wander the lands?

And she still didn't trust that this was not yet another trap set by the demon... But if she stood here and did nothing he'd probably just come back and hold her in place like he did a few moments before and have his way with her anyway- making her become yet another prisoner within the tower.

Gritting her teeth, Alicia closed her eyes and rubbed her temples. She had no idea what to do. In letting Inky leave the tower she was putting others in danger, yet letting the prisoners of the tower run free for the first time in years. In keeping him here- not only would Alicia be stuck within the tower, but all of the prisoners would remain to be tortured alongside the Knight as well- but she would be protecting the outside world from harm. Though, the second option was still more of a temporary fix, considering if Inky wanted out of the Tower, he'd probably simply skew events so that the next person to enter made it through all of the trials regardless of the choices he made.

With a sigh of defeat, Alicia approached the stairs- heading to the final floor of the Tower.

.final destination
The staircase lead to a dark room, lit only by the ethereal light traveling from a point in the darkness to a tremendous engine. It rotated slowly, and the noise of it was not unlike the noise from the machinery of the spikes and the generator from floors prior.

The point in the darkness, hidden among crystals, was a sword that emitted a great, blue sphere of power. It was lodged firmly in the stones, and before it was a small plaque with an inscription.

"Powerful good can be used for unthinkable evil. Discernment is everything. Never lose your direction. Do not make my mistakes."

The blade had an inscription on it: "To pierce an evil heart", but other than that, it was everything the knight would want in a blade. It stood up in the stone there, patiently waiting as it had waited for years.

Behind her, a black cloud bubbled, though it was much less intrusive than before. It was Inky, anxiously waiting, and his anxiety was tangible on the air. One by one, the rats from the first floor came from the shadows, gathering into a quiet, reverent circle outside the periphery of the sword, their tiny faces lit by the glow of power. Inside of this circle, the mother rat and her brood sat a bit closer to the sword, staring towards the knight. Figures with stalactites of ice hanging from their ragged forms crept into the shadows surrounding the sword as well, hope lighting their eyes for the first time in decades. The statues stood frozen in the light as though they'd always been there.

The headless form of Torra, blood pouring uncontrollably from her throat, would gently take a hold of the knight's ankle, as though begging her not to continue, making a mess with her failed attempts at words.

A single tentacle would quietly creep forth from the black cloud behind them both and drag the woman backwards into it, where she became lost in the darkness.

All others in the room looked expectantly to the knight.

[Quest] The Dark Tower - Page 2 Alicia_1

The Dark Tower
Well... here it was. The summation of her journey through the Dark Tower. For some reason- she had envisioned this as being a much more somber event- with less being watched by the spirits of those imprisoned here and being grabbed by a headless woman and more silence and reverie from the horrors she had witnessed on her journey. Instead, she was being revisited by all of them, though they weren't trying to kill her or shouting in agony or attempting to rape her like they had been. They were just watching.

Alicia shuddered. She never did much care for being in the limelight.

Taking a deep, steadying breath, Alicia approached the sword- a truly glorious weapon in it's own right. She could see now why the man who had created the tower had gone through so much trouble to protect it- though she still could not condone him sacrificing his own son's sanity for the sake of a weapon. No one's life was worth being used to keep a mere tool safe- especially when the tool had been crafted specifically to keep others safe. The Knight briefly wondered whether or not Torra could possibly cope with the outside world after losing his/her mind within the tower- as well as whether or not any of the prisoners would be able to re-adapt to their previous lives.

She shook her head. Now was hardly the time to dwell on such thoughts- not when she had already made her decision the floor prior.

"To pierce an evil heart..." she muttered to herself. Funny how much evil had been used to protect something designed to destroy it.

Steeling herself- Alicia gripped the hilt of the blade. It felt right in her hand- like it had always been meant to be her blade and her's alone. With a mighty heave- she wrenched the blade free from it's resting place--
